A Cross National Collaboration of Poets, Dancers, and Musical Composers

The Intonation project is a collaboration between North American poets, students and early career musicians of musical composition from The Jerusalem Academy Of Music and dance, as well as dancers and choreographers from Montclair State University. Our goal is to foster a deeper understanding of culture, artistic process, and humanity through collaboration and the exploration of universal themes. Six poets will participate in two (virtual) writing residencies to create new work. Artists working in dance and other medias will be invited to the residency to conduct workshops to inspire and broaden an understanding for the project’s focal themes. Once completed, the poems are given to six choreographers who will set each to dance. They will record their work, then both the dance and poems will be sent to the composers who will create original scores. This is a circuitous project that emphasizes collaboration, interpretation, and a deeper understanding of the creative voices of others. 

The artists invited to participate in Intonation come from a diversity of backgrounds, which leads to a multi-layered scope of what art/artist in America and abroad looks and sounds like. We strive to showcase the assertion that there is no singular definition of an experience: though we are situated on two different continents and use different modes of expression, we seek to bridge these individual experiences by inviting three sets of artists to use their craft and vision to explore that which we all share in common—our creative spirit, our humanity.
