SPOTLIGHT is an original Arts By The People video series which highlights and promotes artists from a variety of mediums who are doing unique work in their creative fields. We are working with one-of-a-kind, innovative artists and capturing the essence of their work flow and thought process through intimate documentary-style short films.
Arts By The People would like to welcome you into the world of poet Trace DePass in this edition of Spotlight. Along with being named Poet Laureate of Queens in 2016, Trace was chosen as Scholastic’s Teen Editor for 2017. A signature trait of Trace’s work is his exploration of mature and insightful themes through his writing, often drawing from his experiences with growing up in Jamaica, Queens and placing himself in the shoes of characters which he draws inspiration from. He has been involved in the artistic community throughout Manhattan, from leading workshops with the Langston Hughes House, to performing spoken word and making the 2018 Union Square Slam team which competed at the National Poetry Slam In Denver. At twenty years-old, Trace is making his mark on the art world and branching out into different mediums such as percussion and playwriting in addition to his written work. In this edition of Spotlight, get an inside scoop on his relationship with his poetry, while hearing about the different creative journeys he has embarked on. Trace DePass’ work has been published in multiple journals including Great Weather For Media, and his debut book of poems, Self-Portrait As The Space Between Us, is due out in spring by Pank Books.
